J6 Team Update for March 3 – 2nd Pabst Race Results

J6 Parents and Athletes,

After last week’s 37 inches of mountain snow, any weather we get this week is going to be a piece of cake.  It seems we are all set for the rest of the season with the entire mountain available for training and skiing.

Last weekend’s big news was our fantastic Pabst race.  The J6ers were out in force as 9 girls and 12 boys raced a challenging East Meadow giant slalom.  Annsley Martin was our top finisher with a 6th place finish followed closely by Katie Baronowski (7th) . A strong showing from Sophia Bastek placed her 3rd among our group and 10th overall.  All the girls skied well and completed both runs.

Robert Donnellan was our top boy finisher with a tie for 9th place.   His younger brother Tyler skied his best yet this year and finished just .59 back in 13th place.  Watch out Robert, here he comes!  John Morgantini, Blake Roberts, and Bo Nordberg  rounded out the top 15 for BOC.  Good job boys!

A very special thanks to everyone who helped out with the race, and especially to those hardy individuals who helped dig out the snow fences and reset them!

Lyndsay, Lily and I are planning our own J6 championship race in the next couple of weekends and will update you as soon as we finalize the date.

See you on the mountain,

Coach John

J6 Parents and Athletes,

I trust everyone is recovering from last week’s ski marathon.  What a great week!  Not only did we get some fresh snow early in the week, but we got a little blast on the weekend as well.  This coming weekend look for Bromley to be pretty buried from today’s storm with perhaps more snow tomorrow and Friday.   For all you J6ers, I guess the coaches won’t have any excuses not for not skiing the Plunge and Spring Fling.  Get ready to go steep and deep!

We ended the weekend on a high note with timed courses on Lord’s Prayer and School Slope.  The kids were having so much fun being timed, they didn’t want to quit.  Lyndsay, Lily and I had to start taking the course down to make them stop at 2:30.  Great skiing by everyone as we completed good course training for our February 28 Pabst race on Sunday.

Look for some fun on Saturday as we’ll run gates and ski that new snow.

See you on the mountain,

Coach John

J6 Team Update for February 17 School Break

We are in the midst of nine straight days of skiing and having a blast this week! Maybe I’m having more fun than the kids! After a busy weekend running some great courses on East Meadow and Ridge, we’ve taken a couple of days to enjoy the new snow and ski the mountain. Apparently my plea for you “southerners” to bring that snow with you paid off as we got a good 6-8 inches on the mountain. If I had known it was that easy, I’d have asked sooner.

Last weekend also featured a lot of work on pole plants and body position. The athletes are applying their newly honed skills on the mountain on a regular basis. Just ask them to show you pole plants, the ready position, or what “free skiing” means to Lyndsay, Lily and me.

Inspired by Lindsay Vonn’s gold in the DH, we’ll be spending much of our time through the weekend refining our racing skills as we look toward our next race on February 28, the Pabst race at Bromley.

See you on the mountain,

Coach John

J6 Team Update for February 10

Last weekend was a chance to refocus our efforts on some of the important skills we need to ski and race well.  While we regularly work on balance, body position and edges, we took the time to develop some turn shape with our skiers.  Every athlete has shown a great deal of progress in learning to trust their edges and commit to the turn. We took the team to East Meadow for some tighter turns and the kids really came through.  This Saturday we’ll set a course that lets the skiers apply those lessons in a race setting.  Can’t wait!

Next week is the February vacation week and Lyndsay, Lily and I will be around all week.  I hope as many of you as possible will join us for what will undoubtedly be a fun week and our best opportunity to prepare for the next Pabst race at the end of the month.

Now, if you folks from NJ, NY and CT could bring some of that snowy weather up north with you……

J6 Team Update for February 3 – Pabst Race Results

Sunday saw the completion of our first race of the season, a beautiful GS course set on East Meadow.  Cheers to all the athletes in attendance, including our Stratton friends from across the valley.  The girls did especially well, with Annsley Martin taking 4th, Katie Kelly 6th, and Katie Baronowski 8th.    Grace Denious, Haylee Ressa, Ella Ginsburg and Isabelle Roberts all completed both runs down the course as well.  Way to go girls!

Robert Donnellan led our boys with a 10th place.  His second run was 2 seconds faster than the first, better than anyone else in the J6 boys!  Ben Schinto, Micky Wehrle, Jonathan Marvin, Blake Roberts and David Ginsburg also skied well in their first race of the season.

Coach Lyndsay shot video during the race and we should have a chance to look at it this weekend.

Lyndsay, Lily and I are very proud of this group.  They’ve been working hard, having fun, and tearing up the mountain all winter.  Can’t wait for our next race at the end of February.  A special thanks to all the parents who helped out on Sunday and cheered the athletes on.  See you this weekend!

J6 Team Update for Jan. 27

J6 Parents and Athletes,

Every day on the mountain has us improving our skiing and racing abilities.  Last weekend we spent a lot of time in the gates with both brush and J5 GS gates to practice our turns.  We’ve been taking advantage of the warmer skiing weather to mix in a fair amount of time on the upper mountain.  Skiing bumps and steeps forces the kids to apply the techniques we work on at some point nearly every single day.  If you ski by us, you’ll hear me and the rest of the J6 coaching staff harping on hands, body position and edges.

Saturday and Sunday we teamed up with the J5s for some fun gate training on School Slope.  One side benefit – we’re all learning to ride the T-Bar with only the occasional skier falling off!  We’ve put in plenty of time preparing for this Sunday’s Pabst Race on East Meadow.  I know we are all looking forward to it.  Should be lots of fun!

Monday’s blow out rain storm made a lot of snow disappear, but there’s still plenty left to race on.  It’s supposed to be cold later this week, so we’ll have a hard surface by Sunday.  Make sure those skis are tuned up and ready to go!

Good skiing and see you this weekend!

J6 Team Update for Jan. 20

Wow, what a weekend we had! Great skiing all three days and even some fresh powder to take advantage of on Monday.

Saturday and Sunday we spent a lot of time working on our racing skills with courses on School Slope, Lord’s Prayer and Ridge. We’re trying to learn when to start our turns in the course and we used brushes above the gates to help the kids get the idea to start the turn sooner, rather than wait until they are at the gate. We’re definitely making progress. Coach Lindsey added a flush above our stubby course on Saturday to get everyone to turn more quickly and pretty soon the entire J6 team was making better turns throughout the course.

Sunday, we joined the J5’s on Lord’s Prayer for a turny course that made all skiers complete their turns. No cheating here! We followed up in the afternoon with a fairly steep course on Ridge that I was pleased to see how well everyone was handling.

Monday morning’s fresh powder had us off on a new mission: skiing every glade on the mountain! Avalanche Glade, Plunge, Everglade – even White Monkey. After everyone’s hard work over the weekend, a day of fun skiing was just what the coach ordered.

We have the Pabst Race coming up on Sunday, Jan. 31. If you can, please try to get your racer’s skis tuned up. If you are unsure of what to do, see me this weekend and I can point you in the right direction.

See you Saturday!

Coach John
