J6 Parents and Athletes, Dare we believe the rumors on the Weather Channel? Bromley is expecting a few inches of snow tonight, so we should have a good surface this weekend to start off the February break and loosen us all up for FEBFEST. By the way, my favorite part, after the deserts, is the fireworks. They always go much longer than anyone expects. What a great Pabst race last weekend! Top notch performances from all the J6s. All of us J6 coaches are pretty pleased with what we’re seeing. Could there be a future Olympian in the group….? This Saturday the J6s will be split into two groups, with a few of the older racers headed over to Stratton with me for a race. The rest of the J6 team will ski with Laura, Lily and Mac at Bromley. Sunday we will all be back together, and if the surface is good, look for the group to run some gates in the morning then explore the upper mountain in the afternoon. Due to massive popular demand, the J6 coaches will be offering some lucky bidder the chance to ski with not one, not two, or even three but all four coaches for the learning event of your life. Imagine having four coaches yelling instructions all at the same time! How could you possibly learn any faster? Look for our auction sheet in the silent auction. There will also be the chance for some lucky individual to share a day of fly fishing with me. I’m pretty sure that opportunity is priceless. Part of Saturday we used some long runs down Blue Ribbon to work on pole plants and turns. Pretty much everyone has figured out which side to plant their pole on. It’s a start! Sunday we jumped right on to School Slope and set a stubby course with brushes. The brushes help the kids figure out the line between gates as well as where to start their turns. We’re seeing some real improvements here. We also stopped by to watch the J1&2s race. Always good for the kids to see older racers perform and watch real racers put into action the skills we talk about and work on in training. This weekend is our second Pabst race on Sunday at 1pm. Registration in the BOC at 11am as usual. Several of the J6 athletes traveled to Mt. Snow last weekend and did quite well in the race there. Joe Marvin, Jonny’s dad, shot some great video you can see on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbgZegVYYf8 Although we have focused on training and racing at Bromley, we made a BOC decision to give our J6s the choice of attending away races with the J5s. In the past, this has usually been only a couple of athletes. This year that group is larger. Only J6s who are 7 or 8 are eligible to attend these races, and all racers must be a USSA and VARA registered member. Depending on the number of J6 athletes at the away races, we will be sending a coach to help organize and manage the group. I am not actively encouraging this additional racing, but making it available to those families who wish to go. There are two races left this season. February 18 at Stratton, and March 11 at Willard. I’m sure many of you have questions and I’ll be happy to answer them this weekend. See you on the mountain! Coach John
J6 Parents and Athletes, Another soggy week here in the Green Mountains, but we are expecting cold weather tonight and tomorrow night so snow making will be underway at Bromley. I hope everyone had fun at last weekend’s last-minute race on East Meadow. It sure looked like all the skiers had a good time, and I’m pleased to see our skiing improving for nearly everyone.
