Mike Healy, Executive Director

Tell us about yourself: I grew up about 10 minutes from West Mountain in New York, and started skiing there when I was a wee lad. I have worked in the ski and outdoor industry my entire life, and I am absolutely the most excited about my role here as the Executive Director at the BOC. My wonderful wife Heidi and I have three girls (12,14,16), one boy (4), and our dogs (always at least 1). Heidi is a BOC Alum, and our whole family is active in the club. We live right here in Peru, Vermont and enjoy all things outdoors in every season, and winter is hands down our favorite.
What do you do at the BOC? As the Executive Director, I get to wear many “hats” here. The biggest and most important pieces are supporting our amazing coaches, volunteers, and staff, ensuring that the direction of our programs are world class and support our mission, and ensuring that everything “behind the scenes” works. On any given day I could be operating as Chief of Race for a competition, training our volunteer instructors, coaching alongside our fabulous coaches, timing our weekly Innkeepers series, going to a local school to do community outreach for our JISP program, and I have been known to set up a good party or two.

What excites you about the BOC? What doesn’t excite me about the BOC? What is most exciting for me is having the chance to facilitate, participate in, and observe all of the education and coaching of the young people that come through our doors for each of our programs. The BOC is a special place, and it is incredibly rewarding to see what each participant takes away from their time with us.
What is your favorite trail at Bromley?
Twister/Twister. There are lots of amazing trails here at Bromley, and I am partial to the nuclear option. I spent a few winters going uphill for a lap most every morning, and skiing T/T when it is that quiet and you can really step on the gas is quite something. If the mountain is quiet, I will lap this with reckless abandon (with Twister/East Meadow mixed in).
What do you do in the off-season? I enjoy all things outdoors, and am partial to mountain biking, disc golf, and fly-fishing. What I enjoy most in the off-season is spending time with my family. In addition to that, I work every summer here at the club maintaining our buildings, race infrastructure, and planning for the season. I get the opportunity to coach with private camps in Oregon for a few weeks each summer, which allows me to continue in my coaching education. I coach in the fall for our amazing youth soccer program at West River Sports (which is a nordic athlete farm right here in Peru!). I also try and see as much live music as I can from April until October!
What makes the BOC such a special program? From our competition program to our JISP program, the thing that makes us special, and different from other clubs is the community that supports it. Full stop. I have worked with and around many other programs and we have something special here with our BOC family. We provide an opportunity to challenge high performing athletes, and at the same time provide an inclusive space where all athletes can develop their skills and progress toward their goals. The family of volunteers, parents, coaches, and staff is an awesome group. We couldn’t do all of this without you!
Is there anything else you would like parents or athletes to know about you? No, you can’t drive the snowmobile.
