BOC PROGRAMS

Weekend Alpine Race and Freestyle Program

The Bromley Outing Club weekend program is geared to those interested in a fun and educational experience; while instilling, the values associated with competition. Athletes, based on age, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18+, train and race together.  The freestyle program participants are most often found in the park or on the east side.

  • The clubs’ oldest competitors (U16-U21), compete in the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA); as well as, a select few individuals per qualification standards are able to compete in the FIS circuit.
  • The younger (U10-U14) athletes in the program, compete in the Southern Vermont Council, a sub-division of VARA.
    • This series is comprised of alpine clubs from the southern portion of Vermont: Bromley Mountain, Stratton Mountain, Magic Mountain, Mount Snow, and Willard Mountain (NY); with a rotation of specific events being hosted by each mountain’s alpine programs.

Burr and Burton Academy Alpine Race Team

Another program that the Club supports is the Burr and Burton Academy Alpine Team.  The club and East Meadow are the home of the BBA alpine team and Bromley is where the team hosts all its VPA Southern District events and practices.

JISP

The BOC is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization primarily known throughout our local community for its Junior Instructional Ski Program (JISP).  JISP has been teaching skiing to local school children since 1951 and currently has almost 500 area students in our weekly ski program. For many Vermont children, JISP is their first exposure to skiing.   Many of our local community, including ski coaches, instructors and resort staff, started in the JISP program. Many JISP participants currently receive some form of financial support to participate in the program.   No students are turned away from JISP for financial reasons. The BOC relies on a significant core of volunteers to run the program.

Early Training
During Christmas and February breaks, Bromley opens lifts at 7:30 on select days to allow our older athletes to begin training before the mountain gets busy. Specific early training days will be communicated via the weekly BOC newsletters and directly from Coaches.

Volunteering
Volunteering is a critical component of the success of the BOC and our ability to host races.  At the start of the season, we ask that each family sign up, via signup genius, to volunteer.  There are a variety of opportunities both on the hill and off.  For those opportunities that are more technical, training will be provided.

Communication
You will receive an email each Wednesday with updates for the week and weekend.  Coaches will be using WhatsApp to communicate with parents and athletes in each age group during the season.

Raffle Tickets
The Bromley Outing Club must achieve a certain level of fundraising every year to continue to support our scholarship programs and to keep the cost of our programming more affordable for all. As a part of the weekend programs, each athlete will be required to participate and sell at least 24 raffle tickets as a part of our traditional “Feb Fest” celebration and fundraiser (drawing to happen at the end of February 2023). If athletes do not sell their tickets, parents will be required to buy them out at the multi-ticket rate of $10/ea., 3/$25, or 6/$40. This represents a maximum buyout of $160 per athlete.

Team Jackets & BOC Gear
Team jackets are ordered in the spring for the fall.  If you missed this season’s order there will be the opportunity to purchase other BOC team gear throughout the season such as hats & T-Shirts.

Race Registration
At Bromley – Registration for most races is held upstairs in the base lodge in the Stratton Room. In 2022/23, we will be registering athletes using Admin Ski Racing’s website, and registration/bib pickup will be outdoors on the BOC clubhouse deck. Registration typically starts at 7:30. We encourage the athletes to register themselves instead of a parent doing it for them. Pabst Race registration is upstairs in the BOC clubhouse.
Away – Your coach will email you where you will be meeting at an away race. Typically all racers will see each other at registration, which is usually at 7:30. Details about away races are on the VARA page at www.vara.org. Look at the calendar and then click on the race you are going to. There should be details about the time and place of registration and anything else you may need to know.

Awards
Awards are held at the conclusion of the race, typically 1 hour after the end of the race. For races held at Bromley, in good weather, awards are held in front of the BOC clubhouse. In inclement weather they are held upstairs in the base lodge in the Stratton Room which is opposite of the Kid’s Rule area.

RACE DETAILS:
SL – Slalom – The shortest racecourse of all the disciplines, with tightly spaced gates that must be passed with short, quick turns. The distance between most gates ranges from 6-12 meters. Protective body gear is used for blocking (or clearing) the gates.
GS – Giant Slalom – The racing gates are placed further apart to allow for faster speeds and wider turns. The distance between GS gates ranges from 15-27 meters.
SG – Super G: Like Giant Slalom but with even fewer turns to negotiate allowing higher speeds. Not as fast as the Downhill. The distance between the gates in SG ranges from 22-45 meters.

Live Timing
Home and away races are posted on live timing. You can see real time results. This is a great tool if you cannot be at your athlete’s race or cannot hear the announcer while you are at the race. Go to www.live-timing.com

Tuning
Tuning benches are available downstairs in the BOC clubhouse.  Coming to training and races with sharp skis is critical to the success of your child. Your coach will advise you on who is best to tune your athletes skis. We will hold a tuning clinic at the beginning of the season for parents.

Club Championships
At the conclusion of the season, we have a club wide race on East Meadow. ALL BOC athletes, coaches & parents are encouraged to race and wear costumes. A BBQ at the Old Finish is held at the closure of the race. We present awards at the BBQ.

Closing Party & Dinner
On the Saturday evening of the last weekend, we plan to have a closing party and dinner.

BOC BUILDINGS

Clubhouse
Our clubhouse is the red building located across from the base of the East Meadow Chairlift. The downstairs is for athletes to store their equipment and to change into their gear for the day. There are tuning benches for the athletes to use.  The upstairs houses the administrative offices and the coach’s room.

The clubhouse is for ALL BOC athletes. Equipment can be stored. We do not recommend leaving boots overnight because they will not dry out and warm up.  Please mark all your belongings, especially your skis and poles! Since this space is for everyone, we ask that the athletes strive for an atmosphere of mutual respect in their relationships with others, as well as respect for the clubhouse and all items within.

Old Finish/Tom’s Shack/Short Finish
Tom’s Shack is located on the East Meadow trail. It is at the base of Upper East Meadow and serves as the finish house for races on Upper East Meadow. It also has a kitchen and is used for many of our BBQ’s as well as serving lunches to the volunteer race crew. Athletes can also be found here warming up, drinking hot cocoa and reviewing video with their coaches.

New Finish/Tall Finish/”Pig-Dog Finish”
Often referred to as the ‘new finish’ it is a secondary finish house. We use either the new finish or the old finish depending on the type of race as well as the hill conditions. It is also sometimes called the Pig Dog finish.

Peril Finish
The Peril finish shack is at the top of the Peril trail on the East Side.

Upper East Meadow Start House
The start house is at the top of Upper East Meadow. It is where most of our races start. Occasionally we will start on Coaches Knoll, which is a start out in the open and half way down Upper East Meadow where it bumps out.

Lords Prayer Start & Finish
We run a variety of events on the Lord’s Prayer.  2 of our 3 Pabst races, many of our club races and our midweek Innkeepers series are held there.  The start and finish are both on the skiers left of the trail. Take the T-bar up and hang a left to find the course. We also train on Lord’s Prayer as well.

Febfest
Febfest will be held at Bromley Mountain Resort on February 19.  Free to the public, it is a family friendly event that includes a ski/snowboard torchlight parade, fireworks, live music and a cash bar.  Each year over 600 people attend. We will hold our raffle drawing at the FebFest party again this year.
